Am I allowed to say I don’t like kids?

Although our world has somewhat changed, still eyebrows raise, people frown and shake their heads if a woman should dare utter these words ‘I don’t like children’. Chances are that any aged woman nearby would remove her slippers and fling them at the person who makes this careless remark.

In the award- winning American series, Grey’s Anatomy, Christiana Yang is an amazing surgeon who solely wants to concentrate on her career and so does not want kids. In fact, this desire breaks up her marriage and got many calling her ‘heartless’.

I was not so quick to judge, not wanting kids is a person’s choice but saying you don’t like kids is a whole different matter. That should be labeled a crime against humanity. Children can be messy handfuls that make you want to tie them up and bundle them in a cupboard to get some peace and quiet. Yet, the full blessing of kids comes with those moments when they are naughty, sweet, mischievous, helpful, surprisingly smart, sensitive, unusually precocious and downright annoying. How else would you appreciate when they are thoughtful if they are never careless? Do you sell your goose laying the golden eggs simply because it poops around your house? Instead, you come up with strategies to manage the habit.

For goodness sake, you were once a child! How would you feel if someone didn’t like you simply because you were a child, not for any wrong you had done.

Kids don’t remain kids forever. They grow; they go through phases. If you are really evil enough not to like kids, please don’t go around spreading your ‘bad belle’ and hurting the feelings of innocent children. Mind you, I severely frown at ANYBODY making this ignorant statement, male or female. Our culture should not frown on it because it a woman’s job to reproduce but because it is ridiculous, condescending and thoughtless!
